Streetwise Opera summer workshops

Streetwise Opera Manchester performers at Bridgewater Hall

Streetwise Opera Progression Manager, Lucinda Meredith, describes our summer workshop programme:

In response to requests from our Explore Groups for activities during August, we've piloted a creative arts summer programme this year in Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Middlesbrough. Through this, our performers have been able to experience workshops led by partner organisations in a range of performing arts and related art forms.

Our Nottingham Explore group worked at Nottingham Contemporary to create sculptures in response to the gallery's ‘Pablo Bronstein and the Treasure of Chatsworth' summer exhibition and were also treated to a free screening of Peter Greenaway’s The Draughtsman’s Contract. They've also had workshops in shadow puppetry and harmony singing at Theatre Royal Concert Hall. At the harmony workshop, one performer said 'Today has been amazing. I loved how well we did as a team and it's helped me with my voice', whilst another said 'I can now sing in baritone with confidence. I really enjoyed the workshop. Brilliant!'.

In Manchester, performers got creative with words during a tour and poetry workshop at Bridgewater Hall, whilst Gateshead and Middlesbrough groups have been developing their acting skills through drama workshops at the Theatre Royal and mima. There's also been a trip to the Discovery Museum in Newcastle.

We hope these summer activities will not only keep our performers creative and engaged during the summer, but will also give them inspiration for upcoming Streetwise Opera workshops and performances.
