Our London performers were wowed by Cirque du Soleil

Lora Krasteva, Development Manager for With One Voice, writes about her experience with Streetwise Opera performers at Royal Albert Hall:

Wednesday last week I was lucky enough to accompany some of Streetwise Opera’s performers to watch a Cirque du Soleil show at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Ovo was an adventure in the land of the bugs, a colourful display of the unique Cirque brand, a treat for the senses.

I arrived at the venue, my ticket in hand and made it to our seats where the rest of the group was already settled and expecting. While I was looking around to find them I even bumped into an old colleague – small world in the majestic hall!

I chatted with the group, a majority of women who seemed very pleased to have arrived early and be able to sit comfortably in the luscious velvet seats. We were smiling at each other, a bit giddy, a bit shy. Expectation was definitely in the air as some of the performers had come to see a Cirque show years ago, and still remembered how it felt to lose yourself in their world, to witness extraordinary prowess. We took a couple of pictures and passed around chewing gum, like teenagers at a concert.

Then finally the Cirque characters started to crawl over the stage, down below. The lights started to dim, and we flashed each other a last smile in the royal penumbra...

At Streetwise Opera we want to thank Cirque du Soleil for generously donating Ovo tickets to some of the performers that we work with, who have experienced or are at risk of homelessness. Opportunities like these are vital for their well-being, and we are proud to be supported by such an amazing international company in making this happen.
