A Ceremony of Carols (2003)

By Benjamin Britten
World Premiere staging at New College, Oxford

Participants from Streetwise Opera workshops in five Oxford homeless centres performed alongside New College Choir, Oxford in a new staging of Britten’s Ceremony of Carols. The project involved turning the tables on the haves and have-nots in a city whose poverty is often hidden by high art and affluence and put homeless performers centre-stage in a professional opera.

'Astonishing and memorable... anyone expecting evensong was in for a surprise. Invisible people, seen and heard centre-stage.'
