Streetwise Opera joins the Festival of Thrift to present Leading Ladies, a celebration of female empowerment through music.

The performance looks back at the legacy of Ethel Smythe, who composed "The March of the Women", the anthem of the women's suffrage movement, and of Middlesbrough soprano Florence Easton, the first woman to be made a fellow of the Royal Academy of Music.

It also includes music from Giacomo Puccini’s opera Tosca, in which the title character bravely sacrifices her life while facing-off against tyranny, as well as songs from Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera H.M.S. Pinafore, also known as The Lass That Loved a Sailor.

The performance will be on the main stage of the festival. Also, keep an eye out for a 15-minute pop-up performance in the Church around 11:30a, and a 45-minute opera workshop at 1:15pm, at a venue to be confirmed.
