We are featured in BBC’s Britain in Ten Operas

We are very proud to announce that our 2018 production Tell Me The Truth About Love has been featured in BBC Radio 4’s series Britain in Ten Operas.

This programme, conducted by baritone Roderick Williams, highlights ten British operas from the last three centuries and explores what our operatic output can tell us about our national identity.

Episode one of this series, “Royals and Rogues”, features Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Pepusch’s The Beggar’s Opera and Arne’s Alfred

The third and final episode, “Football and Fishermen”, featuring our Tyneside #LoveOpera, will be aired on Wednesday 25 November at 9:00 am.

Tell Me The Truth About Love, a co-production with Royal Northern Sinfonia, was staged at the Sage Gateshead in April 2018. It was a celebration of local culture and traditions, combining Geordie hymns like “Big River”, “Blaydon Races” and “The Water of Tyne” with operatic repertoire.

David Paterson, a Streetwise Opera performer involved in this production, said:

“As a proper Georgie my culture means the world to me. I love Newcastle and I’ll die in Newcastle because this is my home. Seeing this opera recognised in this way makes me feel very proud.”
