Streetwise Opera has joined the Peterloo 2019 programme of events and activities across Greater Manchester to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre.
Participants in our weekly workshops at Manchester Art Gallery have been working with composer Charlotte Marlow to create new protest songs that honour the spirit of public protest, the struggle for democracy and the fight against political repression.
Streetwise Opera will perform these new songs at Royal Northern College of Music with a community of Manchester-based creative artists, including MC Fox (Levelz, Swing Ting), che3kz, electronic composer/producer Mandy Wigby (aka Architects of Rosslyn), and the Ignition Orchestra, led by Katie Chatburn.
Protest Music, on Saturday 6 July at 3:00pm and 8:00pm, will explore three key themes: protest, democracy and freedom of speech. Fast forward 200 years from the Peterloo Massacre and these ideas still resonate strongly.
