Streetwise Opera explores the passion and exuberance of Bizet’s much-loved opera Carmen, examining the motivations of Carmen, Don José and Escamillo, the main characters in one of the most tragic love triangles in opera.
“Love is a rebel bird that nobody can tame”, sings the impetuous and capricious Carmen. The warning is ignored by Don José, a shy and young soldier that abandons everything to follow her, only to see her quickly grow bored of him. As Carmen surrenders to the charisma of the toreador Escamillo, the story quickly heads towards adversity.
This performance marks the end of Streetwise Opera’s summer residency at the Royal Opera House, which explored Barrie Kosky’s production of Carmen.
Singers, instrumentalists and dancers from the Royal Opera House have worked with Streetwise Opera participants during workshops, and will join them for this performance.
