It’s one of the most intense scenes in Verdi’s opera Macbeth: a band of assassins wait in the dark, ready to slaughter Banquo under orders from his treacherous friend Macbeth. As they wait for their victim, they sing “The sun has disappeared, now let night reign, wicked and bloodstained.” This chorus is mysterious, energetic and a true delight to listen to.
