Our work

Streetwise Opera works with partners in the arts and homelessness sectors in five regions across England: London, Manchester, Newcastle Gateshead, Nottingham and Teesside.

In each region we offer a programme for people affected by homelessness that includes free singing and creative workshops delivered weekly in homeless day centres and arts venues, where participants sing, explore stories, have fun and make new friends. Regular participants have opportunities to perform, attend theatre trips and cultural events and join activities in their communities from volunteering to being an ambassador for the charity.

Every two years we stage a major new production in collaboration with leading venues, artists and performing ensembles, which stars participants from our workshops alongside professionals. Our critically-acclaimed productions highlight the achievements of our participants while inspiring audiences and challenging the public’s perceptions of homelessness.

We are a leading commissioner of new music; over the past 5 years we have supported 11 Composers in Residence across the country who have worked with our participants to create powerful and moving works which have been performed to sold-out audiences. Since 2006 we have commissioned 30 works from 24 composers, including Sir James MacMillan, Anna Meredith, Mira Calix and Gavin Bryars.
